As LEAP testing season begins, East Baton Rouge Parish officials are reminding parents that preparation starts well before test day. Mary Wells, district test coordinator for East Baton Rouge Parish, said parents play a major role in helping students succeed during testing season.
Start Preparing the Night Before
One of the biggest takeaways is simple: preparation should begin the night before testing, not the morning of. Wells encouraged parents to focus on sleep, nutrition, and limiting distractions like phones, gaming, and scrolling before bed. A well-rested student is more likely to stay focused and calm during the school day.
Watch Out for Hidden Tech
Schools are also dealing with more than just cell phones. Devices like smartwatches, Bluetooth-enabled beanies, earbuds, rings, and even Meta glasses can create testing security concerns. Wells said parents should review school device rules and make sure students understand what can and cannot be brought into a testing environment.
Support Your Child Emotionally
Testing stress is real, and parents can help by keeping communication open. Wells said simple check-ins after school can make a difference. Ask how the day went, whether your child feels prepared, and what support they need. Positive reinforcement can go a long way during a stressful week.
Use the Right Resources
Parents looking for help can start with their child’s school, teacher, and the Louisiana Believes website. Wells said those resources can offer guidance on what students will see on the test and how to practice smart test-taking strategies.
LEAP scores matter, but so does making sure students feel prepared, supported, and confident when they walk into the classroom.
