Cooking in Central is back this weekend, and according to Central Mayor Wade Evans, the city is pulling out all the stops for one of its biggest festivals yet.
The beloved community event kicks off Thursday with student activities and officially opens to the public Friday at 5 p.m., when Mayor Evans will launch the weekend festivities himself. “This year, we went big,” Evans said, highlighting a packed lineup of live music, food, and family-friendly attractions designed to bring the community together.
Friday night’s entertainment features rising country artist Chase Tyler followed by Cajun music icon Wayne Toups. Central Private School will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, while boiled crawfish will be available starting at 5 p.m. Evans even hinted at a possible surprise guest appearance—and maybe a personal cameo on the tambourine.
Saturday’s schedule is just as full. A Southern Muscle Car Show runs from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with performances by local youth throughout the afternoon. The evening concert lineup begins at 5 p.m. with The Mojos, followed by Lauren Lee at 7 p.m., before legendary New Orleans party band Bag of Donuts closes out the night.
Now in its 18th year, Cooking in Central began as a school fundraiser but has evolved into a signature Central Louisiana festival. Proceeds benefit a wide range of local causes, including youth athletics, school programs, special needs activities, uniforms for students, and nonprofit groups like Cast Iron Assistance.
This year’s cook-off features a “mini-pot jambalaya” competition, welcoming everyone from backyard cooks to seasoned chefs. Judging duties fall to a panel of local leaders, including Senator Rick Edmonds and Sheriff Sid Gautreaux.
