BREC Summer Camp Registration Surges as Baton Rouge Families Rush to Secure Spots

BREC Summer Camps Draw Huge Demand

BREC saw massive demand when summer camp registration opened Saturday morning. Families across Baton Rouge logged on right away to try to secure spots in some of the system’s most popular programs.

Officials said the system handled more than 548,583 registration attempts during the opening rush. At 9:03 a.m., BREC recorded 6,610 requests in a single minute. Leaders compared the traffic to a Black Friday rush, with parents racing to claim limited camp spots.

The demand shows how important BREC camps have become for local families. It also shows the pressure BREC faces as more parents look for safe, engaging, and affordable summer options for their children.

More Camps Need More Staff and Space

BREC leaders said they are now looking at ways to meet that demand. That includes hiring more camp counselors, reviewing available facilities, and studying whether more camp opportunities can open in the future.

Officials urged parents to join waitlists if their first-choice camp is full. Those waitlists help BREC track demand and decide where it may need to expand.

Parents can search for camps by name on the BREC website or browse park pages by area, including Baton Rouge, Central, and St. George. Officials said those updated local pages make it easier for families to find options near home or work.

Parents Say Camps Help Kids Grow

The program’s impact came through clearly in comments from parents like Bianca London and Acqueena Grant.

Grant said her son has attended Sunshine Camp, an adaptive camp for children on the autism spectrum, for five years. She said the camp gives him structure, social interaction, and valuable activities that help him keep building communication skills during the summer.

London said BREC camps have helped all three of her children stay active and connected. She praised the variety of activities, the strong social environment, and the familiar counselors who help kids feel comfortable.

BREC Foundation and Park Planning Move Forward

The show also featured Evante Topp, Director of the BREC Foundation, who said the foundation wants to strengthen community investment in parks, recreation, and the Baton Rouge Zoo.

Meanwhile, BREC continues broader planning work across the parish. Officials will soon release survey results for City-Brooks Community Park and are preparing for a March 19 community meeting in St. George focused on future park plans.
