The Beyond Bars program delivered one of its most emotional conversations yet. Desmond Kennedy and Rashan Williams sat in the studio to share the pain, choices, and losses that shaped their lives. Their goal is to reach kids early, while a different path is still possible.
Desmond Kennedy Faced Fear Before He Could Spell It
Kennedy grew up surrounded by addiction and violence. His mother battled drugs. His father was murdered. By third grade, he carried a loaded gun in his backpack and was expelled.
After that, trouble came fast. He skipped school, fought often, and slid into the drug trade. He spent his teens moving in and out of juvenile detention.
Later, a drug deal collapsed into a home invasion. He now sits 16 years into a 20-year sentence.
During this stretch, he lost both his sister and his grandmother. Their deaths forced him to face what he had ignored for years. He says the turning point came when he realized his choices—not his surroundings—put him in prison.
Now he tells kids the truth he once avoided.
Rashan Williams Lost His Childhood to Survival
Williams grew up in Los Angeles with a mother who struggled with addiction. When food disappeared from the refrigerator, he stole to eat. As he got older, gangs pulled him in, and he landed in juvenile detention again and again.
He came to Louisiana at 18 intending to sell drugs. After a conflict with two men and a later encounter with one of them, he reacted with violence and took a life. A judge sentenced him to life without parole. He has now served 27 years.
Their Message
Both men tell kids the same thing: you always have a choice.
And the wrong one can change everything.
