Summer Camp Registration Opens March 7
BREC leaders say now is the time for families to plan for summer. Registration for BREC’s popular camps opens March 7, and parents across East Baton Rouge Parish will see a wide range of options. Kids can choose art, outdoor adventure, sports, field-trip camps, and adaptive programs for children with disabilities.
Camps are spread across the parish, making it easy for families in Zachary, St. George, Central, Baker, and Baton Rouge to find a site nearby. BREC encourages parents to visit BREC.org and type “summer camps” into the search bar to review locations and details.
Zoo Expands Play Areas and Animal Education
BREC updated visitors on the latest improvements at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo, including a new playground, continued habitat upgrades, and work toward a new education building. The zoo recently welcomed a young giraffe from Oklahoma City, adding to the growing giraffe habitat.
Staff also highlighted the black and Indian rhinos, jaguars, and expanded family areas. The goal is to make visits more interactive and educational, especially for younger children.
Park Improvements Move Forward Across the Parish
BREC continues major upgrades at several parks. Work includes a large culvert replacement at Beaver Creek Golf Course, a new shaded playground and community garden improvements in Allison, and parking lot repairs at Anna T. Jordan Community Park and Lovett Road Park.
Teams follow BREC’s Imagine Your Parks master plan to determine which parks are prioritized for improvement. Public input plays a key role in those decisions.
Volunteer Opportunities and Tax Credit
BREC reported over 35,000 volunteer hours in 2022. Seniors who volunteer at least 30 hours can qualify for a $500 Louisiana tax credit. Volunteers help with events, registration, cleanup, setup, and pickleball court access.
Pickleball Continues Rapid Growth
Pickleball play has surged. BREC now offers more than 100 courts, plus weekly free clinics at Highland. Interest continues to rise, and BREC plans to expand opportunities.
