LSU’s FUEL Initiative Drives Louisiana’s Energy Innovation and Workforce Future

Building the Future Use of Energy in Louisiana

Lacy McManus, Director of Workforce Development for FUEL at LSU, is helping lead a bold effort to strengthen and future-proof Louisiana’s energy sector. FUEL, which stands for Future Use of Energy in Louisiana, serves as the state’s innovation engine, connecting higher education, industry leaders, and economic development partners to position Louisiana at the forefront of next-generation energy.

Based at LSU, FUEL collaborates with colleges and universities across the state, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System, major petrochemical manufacturers, and key partners such as Louisiana Economic Development. The initiative is supported by a National Science Foundation grant worth up to $160 million over ten years, along with significant state matching funds.

Leveraging Louisiana’s Energy Legacy

Louisiana earned this competitive federal funding because of its strong foundation in energy infrastructure, skilled labor, and industrial capacity. Existing pipelines, refineries, and manufacturing facilities provide a platform for innovation. FUEL builds on these assets to launch new intellectual property, support deep-tech startups, and expand economic opportunity.

The initiative aims to spark high-capacity startup growth, particularly in carbon management and advanced energy technologies. Long term, FUEL plans to help establish 100 carbon management startup companies within Louisiana’s ecosystem.

Strengthening the Workforce for Tomorrow

FUEL ensures that innovation does not leave workers behind. Many future energy jobs will rely on the same technical skills that have long powered Louisiana’s oil and gas industry. Engineers, machinists, welders, and pipefitters will remain essential as companies integrate new technologies into existing facilities.

By aligning workforce development, policy, and education, FUEL creates clear pathways for continuous learning and career advancement. Louisiana’s multigenerational energy workforce already has the right skills to lead. Through strategic partnerships and focused investment, FUEL is driving sustainable growth and securing Louisiana’s role in the future of energy.
