A Broadway-Style Inauguration Sets the Tone
State Rep. Mike Bayham attended the inauguration of New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno and described it as unlike anything he has seen before. Held at the Saenger Theatre, the ceremony blended political speeches with musical performances, set changes, and polished production elements more reminiscent of Broadway than City Hall.
Bayham said the presentation mattered. In a city built on tourism and perception, he argued that professionalism sends an important signal to businesses, investors, and major events considering New Orleans.
A Shift From the Cantrell Era
Bayham contrasted Moreno’s style with that of former Mayor LaToya Cantrell, saying the city’s image suffered under years of controversy and combative leadership. While acknowledging Cantrell had some successes, including crime reduction efforts late in her term, Bayham said her overall approach damaged New Orleans’ reputation.
Moreno, a former television journalist with deep political experience, brings a different background. Bayham noted her early work as an intern to a U.S. senator and her long-standing reform message as signs she understands both optics and governance.
A City Council Ready to Work
Bayham also highlighted the current New Orleans City Council as one of the strongest in years, pointing to experienced, independent-minded members with policy depth. That combination, he said, gives Moreno a real opportunity to move legislation and reforms forward—if she can navigate the city’s entrenched civil service bureaucracy.
America 250 Comes to Louisiana
Beyond city politics, Bayham is helping lead Louisiana’s involvement in America 250, the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. Events include Liberty Tree plantings in every parish, Revolutionary War commemorations, and a major educational showcase during the Krewe of Bacchus Parade.
Bayham said families should expect history brought to life all year long, with Louisiana’s unique role in shaping America finally getting its spotlight.
