Louisiana’s Broadband Breakthrough Is Closing the Digital Divide

How a Crisis Sparked Action

In 2020, the pandemic exposed a serious problem in Louisiana. Many families did not have reliable internet. As a result, students struggled with school, and workers fell behind. Because of that gap, state leaders created Louisiana’s Office of Broadband.

In 2021, Vaneeth Iyengar joined the effort. At the time, the office had no map, no staff, and no system. Still, the team built everything from the ground up.

Moving Faster Than Other States

Although many people believed Louisiana was behind, that was not true. In reality, every state started at the same point. However, Louisiana moved faster. The office built a strong team, secured funding, and pushed projects forward.

At the same time, federal support helped accelerate progress. Louisiana received $176 million through the American Rescue Plan. Importantly, the state is on track to spend every dollar on completed projects.

A $1.35 Billion Investment in Progress

Next, Louisiana will deploy $1.35 billion in broadband grants. Construction will begin within the next few months. By 2028, the state expects to close the digital divide statewide.

Even now, progress is visible. Thousands of homes and small businesses in East Baton Rouge Parish will soon gain access to high-speed internet. That includes areas many people did not realize were still unserved.

Real Results for Louisiana Families

Most importantly, residents already see the benefits. Increased competition has lowered prices and improved service. As a result, some families now save hundreds of dollars each month.

Kids can complete homework without interruptions. Streaming works smoothly. In addition, many households no longer need expensive cable plans.

Smarter Spending, Bigger Impact

Through a competitive grant process, Louisiana encouraged lower bids. Because of that approach, the state saved nearly $800 million for taxpayers. Now, leaders want to reinvest those savings in workforce training, telehealth, and digital growth.

A Model That Delivers

Above all, this effort proves good government can work. The mission stays clear: connect people. By staying focused and efficient, Louisiana is leading the nation—and delivering results that matter.
