The Mayor’s Office Is Seeking Your Input

In this interview, representatives from the Mayor’s Office of Community Development (OCD) — Kelly LeDuff and Laci Sherman — joined the show to discuss Baton Rouge’s new Five-Year Consolidated Plan. This strategic initiative, funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), sets priorities for addressing critical community issues such as affordable housing, crime prevention, and neighborhood revitalization. With input from residents playing a central role, the plan aims to shape how federal resources are allocated throughout the parish.

The interview highlighted the importance of community engagement through two upcoming workshops, where residents can help prioritize spending via interactive activities simulating real-world funding decisions. These sessions will be held on May 13 at the Main Library on Goodwood and May 15 at Milton J. Womack Park. Both meetings are designed to be accessible, with transportation support, paper surveys, and Spanish-language materials available.

Kelly LeDuff emphasized the administration’s focus on breaking down silos, fostering inter-agency collaboration, and creating a comprehensive Office of Violence Prevention that addresses blight, homelessness, and workforce development together. He underscored the importance of wraparound services and real partnerships, noting that effective, lasting change comes not just from programs, but from building trust and sharing responsibility with the community.

Laci Sherman added that over 400 surveys had already been collected and the team is working hard to reach more residents, particularly those without easy internet access. Ultimately, the feedback collected will directly shape the five-year plan and its one-year action strategy for 2025.

This isn’t just a planning exercise — it’s a call to action. Residents are encouraged to show up, get involved, and help shape the future of Baton Rouge, together. More information is available at www.brla.gov/communityplan.
