As the Louisiana state legislature prepares to convene for the 2025 regular session, insurance reform is set to be a central focus. State Representatives Emily Chenevert and Gabe Firment discussed the upcoming session and the extensive groundwork laid to address the state’s insurance issues.
Firment highlighted the significant challenges Louisiana faces with auto insurance, noting that the state has more than twice the national average for bodily injury claims and four times the national average for litigated claims. These issues have driven up insurance costs, making Louisiana the most unaffordable state for auto insurance.
Chenevert emphasized the importance of creating a fair legal climate to support businesses and reduce insurance costs. She pointed out that Louisiana’s current system allows individuals found largely at fault in accidents to still collect damages, unlike the majority of other states.
Both representatives stressed the urgency of addressing these issues and praised Speaker Devillier for prioritizing insurance reform in the session’s early weeks. They acknowledged the cultural challenges but expressed optimism that legislative changes could help shift the state’s “jackpot justice” mentality.
With a comprehensive package of bills ready for consideration, the legislators are hopeful that meaningful reforms can be achieved to make Louisiana a more attractive place for insurance companies and ultimately lower costs for residents.
