BRPD Seeks Ways To Trim Budget

Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr joined the show to talk about the recent announcement that the Department would be cutting out their shot spotter devices. Chief Morse explained that over the course of the last 18 years, technology has evolved, crime has shifted, but the shot spotters remain positioned where they’ve always been, which only covers a very small portion of the city. He added that what they’ve found over time is that the alerts from the shot spotters are often accompanied by a 911 call, making them somewhat redundant.

When you couple this with the $400,000 it takes to keep the service up and running, at a time when his budget is being trimmed by as much as $9 million, they made the call to move on from the service.

While the chief was in, he updated the audience on the latest Citizens Academy and previewed the upcoming Equalizer training for women.
