Veneeth Iyengar joins the show to discuss how Louisiana has made significant strides in expanding broadband access, targeting 140,000 households, 35,000 small businesses, and 4,000 community anchor institutions that previously lacked internet. The initiative, which began on August 19th, has been highly efficient, resulting in a cost of $750 million for the broadband expansion, leaving over half a billion dollars in surplus funds. These funds can be used for workforce development, rural telehealth, K-12 education, and precision agriculture.
The state has prioritized a free-market approach to maximize competition among companies, ensuring the best use of funds. This efficiency has allowed Louisiana to invest in future-oriented projects, such as developing the nation’s best education-to-employment pipeline system, with $280 million allocated from the surplus.
Louisiana’s proactive approach has set it apart from other states, with plans approved well ahead of others like Texas. This urgency is driven by the immediate need for broadband and the necessity to secure investments from companies making capital allocation decisions. The state’s alignment between the governor and the legislature, along with efforts to secure supply chains and workforce, has made Louisiana an attractive place for broadband investment.
The state has committed $30 million to community college workforce systems, offering short-term certifications for direct employment in broadband-related jobs. The construction work is expected to be completed within 24 months, with significant progress starting in the first quarter of next year.
Local companies have been major beneficiaries of the broadband initiative, with 75% of the $750 million allocated to local firms. This ensures that the investment circulates within the state, creating jobs for Louisianans. The consortium of local companies, including Rev and Swift Fiber, partnered with T-Mobile to build resilient infrastructure, with over 90% of it being underground to withstand natural disasters like Hurricane Ida. This strategic approach has positioned Louisiana as a leader in broadband expansion.
