Corey Wilson, Superintendent of BREC, shared exciting updates about the upcoming fall calendar and significant projects in Baton Rouge. Wilson highlighted the grand opening of the improved Baton Rouge Zoo and Greenwood Community Park on October 5th. These enhancements include a new playground, golf course improvements, and a new entrance, all aimed at providing better facilities for the community.
Wilson emphasized the community’s role in suggesting these changes and the journey since 2018 to connect the zoo and park. He also discussed the “Imagine Your Parks” master plans, which have been transforming the park system since 2004. The next phase, “Imagine Your Parks 3,” will focus on equity, community, and sustainability to ensure quality parks for all residents.
Additionally, Wilson mentioned the significant economic impact of these projects. The improvements are expected to create numerous jobs and boost local businesses. The Amazon fulfillment center at Cortana Mall, for instance, is a major new driver, employing around 500 people with plans to add another 500.
Wilson also touched on the importance of industrial construction in the region, particularly in the chemical industry. The abundance of cheap natural gas in the U.S. compared to other regions is attracting many companies to Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Lake Charles. However, Lake Charles faces uncertainty due to a pause on new LNG project permits by the Biden administration, affecting $60 billion worth of projects.
Overall, Wilson’s interview painted a positive picture of Baton Rouge’s future, with significant developments in parks, economic growth, and job creation. The community’s involvement and the focus on sustainability and equity are key elements driving these improvements.
