This initiative, the first of its kind in 24 years, aims to bring firefighter pay in Baton Rouge up to the industry standard, thereby enhancing public safety by attracting and retaining top talent. Morgan emphasizes the importance of voting “yes” on this proposition, despite the ballot’s vague wording that omits specific references to firefighters or public safety.
Morgan also addresses the challenges faced in recruitment and retention, noting competition from other fire departments within the parish that offer higher pay. The Baton Rouge Fire Department currently has about 560 employees, with 18 new firefighters set to join soon. He explains that firefighters respond to all 911 calls, not just fires, due to their extensive resources and personnel.
Additionally, Morgan recounts a recent setback at the Metro Council, where a proposal to roll over an existing millage was denied. This decision means the department must rely on the new 6-mill property tax to secure the necessary funding for salaries and benefits. Despite this hurdle, Morgan remains optimistic, citing strong community support and the department’s excellent reputation for service.
