Momentum grows for a special session on taxes

The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry (LABI), the state’s Chamber of Commerce, is actively engaging with its members across the state to gather input for their legislative agenda. This period, referred to as “regional rallies,” allows LABI to connect with businesses in various regions, understand their needs, and update their longstanding program, which addresses issues like energy, transportation, civil justice reform, and employee relations.

LABI President and CEO Will Green highlights the importance of these rallies, which include special ceremonies to honor legislators who have supported business-friendly policies. Recent rallies have taken place in Covington, Lafayette, Houma, Monroe, Shreveport, New Orleans, and Lake Charles. These events coincide with legislative committee meetings on tax and insurance policies, adding urgency to LABI’s efforts.

Green notes that Louisiana faces significant tax challenges, including high corporate income and franchise taxes, and an inventory tax. With other states reducing their tax burdens to attract businesses, there is a push for Louisiana to follow suit. However, any tax reforms must be carefully planned to avoid unintended consequences, such as double taxation or unfair burdens on certain sectors.

LABI is advocating for the elimination of the corporate franchise tax and the inventory tax, but acknowledges that this will require balancing the budget by reviewing and possibly eliminating certain tax exemptions and exclusions. The organization is also considering updates to the tax code to reflect modern purchasing habits, such as taxing digital goods.

Overall, LABI’s regional rallies are a crucial step in gathering the information needed to advocate for effective tax reforms and other policies that will support business growth and economic development in Louisiana.
