LSU and Integer Technologies from South Carolina have partnered to secure a $9.8 million research contract with the US Navy. Greg Trahan from LSU, who heads up economic development, joined the show to discuss the partnership.
The collaboration aims to support the Navy’s shift towards distributed maritime operations, which involves advanced technologies like drones, underwater agents, and autonomous systems. The Navy requires assistance in integrating and developing these solutions, and LSU, identified by Integer, is well-equipped to help. The partnership has been in development for about two years, with research already underway at LSU.
The focus of the collaboration is on addressing the challenges of operating in contested environments, where secure and efficient data transmission is crucial. This requires expertise from various fields, including mechanical and electrical engineering, computer science, data analysis, and cybersecurity. LSU’s research capabilities and technical expertise make it an ideal partner for this project.
In addition to technological advancements, the partnership is expected to create numerous job opportunities. Integer Technologies is opening an office in Baton Rouge to leverage LSU’s research and talent pool. They have already hired several LSU graduates who are now working on the Navy project.
LSU President William Tate played a significant role in establishing this partnership, leveraging his connections from his previous tenure in South Carolina. His focus on defense as a key research area has been instrumental in building the necessary teams and securing the contract.
The project also highlights LSU’s growing presence in the field of cybersecurity, particularly in memory forensics and malicious software. The expertise developed through this partnership will have broader applications across various industries, benefiting both Louisiana and the nation.
